Medical disclaimerWhat is DSIP?
Delta sleep-inducing peptide, a chain of nine amino acids first isolated from rabbit brain in the 1970s. It is not a sedative: the published work describes it acting on the structure of sleep rather than switching consciousness off.
The human evidence is old, sparse and mixed, and is worth reading before the dose figures. Infused at 25 nmol per kg, it raised total sleep time by 59% against placebo in six volunteers. In 16 patients with chronic insomnia the effect was statistically weak, and that trial concluded that short-term treatment of chronic insomnia with DSIP was unlikely to be of major therapeutic benefit. A seven-night study in 14 middle-aged insomniacs did, by contrast, report improved sleep and better daytime alertness.
No regulator has approved it for insomnia or for anything else.
